About Arran

The Isle of Arran is Scotland’s most southerly and accessible island, 13 miles from mainland Ayrshire by ferry  (55 minute crossing from Ardrossan)  and less than  two  hours  from Glasgow.   Located in the Firth of Clyde between Ayrshire and Kintyre (Argyll),  Arran is 19 miles long by 10 miles wide.   Our scenery is stunning with rugged granite mountain peaks in the north,  green rolling hills in the south and ever changing coastal views around every corner have attracted visitors to the area for centuries.   Rich in its historical and cultural heritage, the island has a vibrant and active community, much of which is well documented in the Arran Museum in Brodick www.arranmuseum.co.uk .

Lamlash was a key naval anchorage during the Second World War   and is now a popular  yachting and boating area, providing a safe anchorage for vessels of all shapes and sizes.    A section of Lamlash Bay has been  designated a 'No Take Zone' for fishing, allowing marine life to recover.   Craig Dhu is located at the westerly boundary of that  zone.    Local campaigning continues for the whole of Lamlash Bay to be designeated a 'Marine Conservation Area'.     The village is also home to Arran’s main hospital, high school and local government offices.  There are bars, restaurants, shops and other local amenities (including putting, tennis, bowling and golf) all within walking distance.   New leisure centre has recently been opened to the public in the evenings, weekends and during school holidays at  Arran High School.  This provides access to an excellent range of  fitness  facilities and excercise classes.

Lamlash is also noted as a good place to set off for a daytrip to Holy Island www.holyisland.org. Holy Isle is owned by the Samyé Ling Buddhist Community, the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.  The settlements on the island include the Centre for World Peace and Health, founded by Lama Yeshe Losal.  This is an environmentally designed residential centre for courses and retreats which extends the former farm house.  There is a regular ferry service from Lamlash pier.
